State Revenue Office Victoria — motor vehicle duty current rates · rates effective 1 July 2026

Victorian duty is charged in fixed increments of the car's value, with the value rounded up to the next increment before the rate is applied. Which rate you get depends on the type of car: "green" passenger cars, those at or below an emissions limit, electric vehicles included, and primary producer cars pay a single low concessional rate whatever they cost.

Other passenger cars step through several value bands, and here's the catch: the band's rate applies to the whole value, not just the part above the boundary. Nudging a car's price over a band line lifts the rate on the entire price, so the duty can jump noticeably for a small difference in value. Non-passenger vehicles like utes and vans have their own lower rate when new, and the standard rate when used.
