Car Registration Cost by State (2026-27)
Registration isn't priced the same way twice across Australia. One state charges by the car's weight, another by its engine, another by its emissions or by the postcode it's garaged in, and each bundles a different set of compulsory extras into the bill. So there's no single national rego figure, and comparing states means comparing apples with oranges unless you break the total apart.
That's what these pages do. The sticker you think of as "rego" is really several charges stacked together: a base fee, a vehicle tax, compulsory injury insurance and, in some states, a handful of levies. We itemise every line for each state so you can see exactly what you're paying for and why one state costs more than the next.
