Car Stamp Duty in South Australia — Calculator & 2026-27 Rates
Four value tiers for non-commercial vehicles, topping out at $60 plus $4 per $100 (or part) of the value over $3,000 — no high-value surcharge exists.
RevenueSA — stamp duty on vehicles · rates effective 17 July 2026South Australian duty for a private, non-commercial vehicle runs on a tiered value scale. At the bottom the duty is a small flat amount; as the value rises it steps up into value-based rates, with higher brackets added for more expensive vehicles in a recent state budget. Commercial vehicles run on their own separate, lower scale.
Because the brackets climb with value, the more a car is worth, the higher the rate that effectively applies, so duty rises faster than value across the scale.

Frequently asked questions
- How much is stamp duty on a $50,000 car in SA?
- For a passenger vehicle: $1,940.00 ($60 + $4 per $100 over $3,000). The calculator above shows the math for any value.
- What value is SA duty charged on?
Duty is charged on the vehicle's dutiable value, broadly the price paid, or the market value where that's higher. The value decides which bracket of the scale the car falls into, and therefore the rate that applies.
- Who is exempt from motor vehicle duty in SA?
South Australia has exemption and concession categories. Commonly across the states these cover certain family transfers, primary producers, and eligible pensioner or veteran concessions, and commercial vehicles are assessed on their own lower scale. Conditions apply and change, so check Revenue SA for your circumstances before assuming a concession applies.
