Car Registration Cost in New South Wales (2026-27)
Registration fee: $84.00 + Motor vehicle tax (1151–1500 kg tare, private): $391.00
Transport for NSW — vehicle registration fees · rates effective 1 July 2025New South Wales splits rego into two government charges. There's a base registration fee that's the same for every light vehicle, and a motor vehicle tax that climbs with the car's tare (unladen) weight, so the heavier the car, the more tax it attracts. Private and business vehicles sit on separate scales, and business vehicles are rated higher than private ones of the same weight.
The part that trips people up is CTP, the compulsory green slip. In NSW you buy it separately from an insurer before you can renew, so the amount on your renewal notice isn't the full cost until you've added a green slip on top. A temporary government discount currently reduces the fee on private light-vehicle renewals; business vehicles don't get it, and the fees themselves are lifted each year in line with inflation.
NSW rego estimator
NSW is the only state where CTP (the green slip) is bought separately, before rego renewal — it is NOT in these figures. See our green-slip pages.
A one-off $100 discount ($80 motorcycles; $50/$40 for 6-month terms) applies automatically to private light-vehicle renewals dated 1 September 2026 – 31 August 2027. Business vehicles and concession holders excluded.

- Can I register for less than 12 months in NSW?
New South Wales lets you register for half a year instead of a full year. The government fees are scaled down for the shorter term, and where the temporary private-vehicle discount applies it's scaled to match, so a half-year registration works out to roughly its share of the annual charges once you've also arranged a green slip for the same period.
