Car Registration Cost in Northern Territory (2026-27)

$849.25 for 12 months, a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder car

12-month registration (1501–2000 cc): $849.25

NT Government — registration fees (1 July 2026) · rates effective 1 July 2026

The Northern Territory prices registration off the engine, using both its capacity and its cylinder count across two separate tables. What's unusual is that the figure you see already includes everything: the MAC compulsory third-party premium, the GST on it and an admin fee are all baked in, so there's no separate CTP to buy on the side.

Plug-in electric vehicles get a break for now. They pay only the fixed insurance and admin part of the bill, with the registration component itself waived, until the scheme reaches its end date.

Because the NT total already wraps in the MAC third-party premium, the GST on it and the admin fee, the number on the notice is close to the all-in cost of getting on the road, with no CTP to arrange separately.

  • Included: the registration charge by engine capacity and cylinders, the MAC compulsory third-party premium, GST on it and the admin fee.
  • Extra: number plates or transfer costs when first registering or buying.
