Car Stamp Duty in Australian Capital Territory — Calculator & 2026-27 Rates

$1,707.50 on a $50,000 non-rated / used car

Emissions-category rates per $100 with MARGINAL tiers at $45,000 and $80,000 — each slice of value is charged at its own rate, cleanest cars cheapest.

ACT Revenue Office — motor vehicle duty (DI2025-152, in force) · rates effective 1 September 2025

ACT duty is also built around the car's emissions category, with the cleanest cars charged the lowest rates and the dirtier ones more. What sets it apart is how value is treated: duty is worked out in marginal tiers, so each slice of the price above a threshold is taxed at that slice's rate. Crossing a threshold only lifts the rate on the part above it, not the whole value, which is gentler than the states where passing a threshold reprices the entire amount.

Electric and zero-emissions vehicles are no longer duty-free, but as the cleanest category they pay the lowest rates. Most used cars have no emissions rating and fall into the non-rated category. An updated determination is set to lift the rates on the dirtier categories, so these pages carry both the current and the upcoming schedule.

Frequently asked questions

How much is stamp duty on a $50,000 car in ACT?
For a non-rated / used vehicle: $1,707.50 (non-rated emissions category, marginal tiers at $45,000/$80,000). The calculator above shows the math for any value.
What value is ACT duty charged on?

Duty is charged on the car's dutiable value, broadly what you pay for it, and the rate depends on the car's emissions category as well as the value. Most used vehicles carry no emissions rating and are assessed in the non-rated category, so for a typical second-hand car it's the non-rated rates that apply.

Who is exempt from motor vehicle duty in ACT?

The ACT has exemption and concession categories. Common ones across the jurisdictions include certain family transfers, primary producers, and concessions for eligible pensioners or veterans. The categories and their conditions change over time, so check Access Canberra or the ACT Revenue Office for what applies to your situation before assuming you qualify.
