Car Stamp Duty in Queensland — Calculator & 2026-27 Rates

$1,500.00 on a $50,000 4-cylinder car

Per-$100 rate set by engine type and a $100,000 threshold: hybrids/EVs $2 → $4, up to 7+ cylinders $4 → $6, applied to the whole value.

Queensland Government — vehicle registration duty rates · rates effective 17 July 2026

Queensland duty is charged on the car's value, and the rate depends on two things at once: the engine type and the value. Hybrids and electric vehicles get the lowest rate; from there the rate rises with the number of cylinders, so a four-cylinder car is charged less than one with more cylinders.

Value comes in above a threshold: past it, the higher rate applies to the whole value, not just the excess. A car priced just over the line is charged that higher rate on its entire value, so the duty can step up sharply right at the threshold. The value is rounded up to the next increment before the rate is applied.

Frequently asked questions

How much is stamp duty on a $50,000 car in QLD?
For a 4-cylinder vehicle: $1,500.00 ($3 per $100 (1–4 cylinders)). The calculator above shows the math for any value.
What value is QLD duty charged on?

Duty is charged on the dutiable value, rounded up to the next increment. The rate that applies then depends on both the value and the engine, whether the car is a hybrid or electric vehicle, or how many cylinders it has, so the same price can attract different duty depending on what's under the bonnet.

Who is exempt from motor vehicle duty in QLD?

Queensland has exemption and concession categories of its own. Common ones across the states include certain family transfers, primary producers, and eligible concession-card holders or veterans. What's available and the conditions attached shift over time, so check the Queensland revenue office for your case rather than assuming a category applies.
