Car Stamp Duty in Tasmania — Calculator & 2026-27 Rates

$2,000.00 on a $50,000 passenger car

Passenger cars: $3 per $100 up to $35,000, a steep bridge to $40,000, then $4 per $100 on the whole value. Non-passenger light vehicles stay flat at $3.

State Revenue Office Tasmania — motor vehicle duty rates · rates effective 17 July 2026

Tasmanian duty depends on the kind of vehicle. Passenger cars are tiered by value: a small flat minimum at the very bottom, a standard rate through the common price range, a steep bridging band just above a mid threshold, then a higher rate on the whole value beyond it.

That bridging band is the sting. Crossing the mid threshold pushes a car into a much steeper charge, and above it the higher rate is worked out on the entire value, not just the excess. Non-passenger light vehicles and motorcycles skip all of this and stay on the flat standard rate at any value.

Vehicle valueDuty
Up to $600$20 flat
$600 – $35,000$3 per $100 or part
$35,000 – $40,000$1,050 + $11 per $100 over $35,000
Over $40,000$4 per $100 or part of the whole value
Non-passenger light vehicles & motorcycles$3 per $100 (minimum $20) at any value
Heavy vehicles (over 4.5 t GVM)$1 per $100 (minimum $20)

Charged per $100 or part. The $35,000–$40,000 bridge ($1,050 + $11 per $100 of the excess) exists so the scale lands exactly on $4 per $100 of the whole value at $40,000 — above that, the whole value is re-rated.

Frequently asked questions

How much is stamp duty on a $50,000 car in TAS?
For a passenger vehicle: $2,000.00 ($4 per $100 (or part) on the whole value above $40,000). The calculator above shows the math for any value.
What value is TAS duty charged on?

Duty is charged on the vehicle's dutiable value, broadly the price paid or the market value where that's higher. For a passenger car the value also decides which tier of the scale applies, which is what makes the mid threshold matter so much.

Who is exempt from motor vehicle duty in TAS?

Tasmania has exemption and concession categories. Common ones across the states include certain family transfers, primary producers, and eligible pensioner or veteran concessions, while non-passenger light vehicles sit on the flat rate regardless of value. Conditions apply and change, so check the State Revenue Office of Tasmania for what fits your situation.
